Michigan State football: Playing time odds for 2022 class defensive signees
Quavian Carter, S
Safety room:
Losing: CJ Hayes, Emmanuel Flowers
Returning: Xavier Henderson, Angelo Grose, Darius Snow, Tate Hallock, A.J. Kirk
Bringing in: Dillon Tatum, Jaden Mangham, Malik Spencer, Malcolm Jones
Quavian Carter (No. 681 nationally, No. 60 safety) is another one of the seven defensive back commitments for the Spartans. Carter brings imposing length (6-foot-4) to the safety position, being the tallest defensive back signee in this class and he will be tied for tallest on the MSU roster alongside Tate Hallock.
Carter held some prestigious offers with Clemson, Penn State, and Michigan being some of the competition Tucker beat for his services.
As mentioned previously, there is a lot of competition in this group due to both the number of returnees and of defensive backs coming in inside this class. This makes it hard to see Carter getting a lot of traction in the competition for playing time due to these reasons. He will get the summer training camps to state his case, but he will most likely not see the field unless he shines on special teams.
Prediction
Redshirt. Carter comes in without much of a chance to see the field as a freshman. This is a fair tradeoff, as plenty of spots will be open after this season. Carter will get a chance to develop and learn from coach Harlon Barnett while learning the playbook. After a year of this, the time is ripe for him to compete for playing time.
Pending a breakout season for any of the trio of Kirk, Tatum, or Mangham, there will be an open competition for playing time at safety. This will be a spirited battle to revisit next offseason.
