Michigan State basketball has landed its first 2023 commit in the form of top-30 point guard Jeremy Fears from La Lumiere.

La Lumiere High School has been kind to Michigan State basketball in the past as Jaren Jackson Jr. committed to the Spartans in 2017 and became an instant star.

On Thursday, the Indiana-based school provided Michigan State with another elite recruit on a silver platter who is sure to be a star in East Lansing.

At halftime of his 5 p.m. ET game, Jeremy Fears announced his college decision between Michigan State, Michigan, and Illinois and the Spartans picked up the commitment from the four-star point guard who ranks in the top 30 in the 2023 class.

Fears is the No. 27 overall recruit, seventh-best point guard, and No. 1 prospect based in the state of Indiana in the 2023 class, according to the composite.

He becomes the Spartans’ first 2023 commitment, following up the 2022 class which currently has four-star forward Jaxon Kohler and four-star point guard Tre Holloman. Fears’ commitment gives the Spartans their future point guard who looks like the perfect complement to the roster in a couple of years.

What does Fears bring to Michigan State basketball?

Fears doesn’t have the best shot and he isn’t known for being a major offensive threat, but whenever he does develop that, he’s going to be scary-good. He’s an athlete and he isn’t afraid to drive to the lane and score in creative ways near the basket. Adding a shot will do him well.

The La Lumiere point guard stands 6-1 and 165 pounds so he has room to grow, but when he grows, the offense will likely come, too.

Tom Izzo is putting together a nice roster for the next couple of years with the 2020 class of Mady Sissoko and AJ Hoggard, a 2021 class of Max Christie, Jaden Akins, and Pierre Brooks, a 2022 class of Kohler and Holloman, and a 2023 group started by Fears.

Hopefully national title No. 2 for the head coach isn’t too far off.
