Michigan State Basketball: 3 observations from sluggish win over High Point
By Nate Rhoades
Michigan State basketball came out flat in the early stages and continued that play until the final 10 minutes against High Point.
From slow, sluggish start to finishing strong, this was a painful Michigan State basketball game to watch for 30 out of the 40 minutes. The Spartans needed to use all 40 minutes to escape with a win against the Panthers of High Point.
Michigan State, which is known for its defensive prowess, did not defend well all game. With two starters down, this team was given everything High Point had and it was a close contest for much of the game.
This overachieving Spartan squad still has a lot to learn before the big tournament in March. They still have a lot to prove and they still have things to tweak. What did we learn from this game?
3. Joey Hauser’s confidence continues to grow
With two starters, Marcus Bingham and Max Christie, out due to COVID-19 protocols, Joey Hauser stepped up his play. This is the best game he has had all season and arguably since he became a Spartan. He ended the game with a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
With every game, Hauser’s whole demeanor is getting better. You see him stepping into his shot more. He is also not forcing a lot of things and letting the game come to him. Hauser is moving off the ball better and that is letting him get good matchups and space to shoot.
Hauser has been said to be one of the best shooters on the team and we have yet to see that on full display. If this trend continues and his confidence continues to grow, we could see his full potential in league play in the new year.
This team can turn the corner and start to become great if Hauser continues this type of play and they get their other two starters back.
