Michigan State football kicked off Early Signing Day a few hours early with a commitment from three-star safety Malcolm Jones.

The first recruiting victory of the early signing period for Mel Tucker and Michigan State football came a little early as three-star safety Malcolm Jones committed on Tuesday night.

Just hours before Early Signing Day, Jones made it official on Twitter and announced he was committed to Michigan State. This came just one day after decommitting from Virginia Tech and a few days after a visit to East Lansing.

A Dec. 11 offer after a visit to Michigan State changed the game for Jones who decided that Mel Tucker’s Spartans were a better fit for him than a Virginia Tech program in the midst of a coaching change.

Jones has some impressive tools, according to 247Sports‘ Corey Robinson.

A speedy safety who has good leadership skills and who can lay the lumber? That sounds like a perfect fit on a defense that needs a lot of help.

Jones held just a handful of offers on 247Sports and chose Michigan State after a late offer which just shows that Tucker is a closer. He’s ranked the No. 806 overall recruit and 64th-best safety in the 2022 class, according to the composite. His 247Sports rating is a little higher as he’s an 88-rated player and 49th-best safety according to the service.

Michigan State football’s signing day fun just getting started

Michigan State isn’t done with Early Signing Day after the Jones flip. In fact, the Spartans are hoping to land Caleb Coley, a high three-star cornerback from Georgia, four-star receiver Armani Winfield, three-star defensive end Zion Young, and five-star offensive tackle Kiyaunta Goodwin.

If all goes as planned for Michigan State on Wednesday, it’ll land at least three of those guys and finish with a top-20 class.

Jones just kicked off the fun a little early.
