Michigan State basketball’s AJ Hoggard had a prime opportunity to ignite the Breslin Center crowd with a dunk against Toledo, but he didn’t take it.

Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball got into the win column yet again on Saturday evening, improving to 7-2 on the year with an 81-68 win over Toledo.

The final score wasn’t quite indicative of how dominant this effort was from Michigan State as the Spartans were up 25 points at one point in the first half. Toledo chipped away and made things more interesting than they should’ve been late.

A win’s a win, however, and the Spartans have to feel good about it ahead of Big Ten play on Wednesday at Minnesota.

And even though he helped secure the win, AJ Hoggard had something else on his mind after the game: a missed opportunity.

Up 21-12, Hoggard jumped a lazy pass by Toledo and raced down the court with no one in his area code. Fans were almost expecting him to take his time, gather, and throw down to ignite the crowd. He did the exact opposite. He didn’t think twice and just layed up off the backboard for an easy deuce. Not exactly a crowd-pleaser, but it was the safe move.

Following the game, Hoggard took to Twitter to issue an apology for laying the ball up instead of dunking.

Obviously, he’s just joking, but this is a fantastic way to win over fans. You usually don’t expect players to remember a moment like this because he still scored two points, but it was eating at him enough that he took to Twitter to send an apology to Spartan Nation, attached with an “IOU”.

This was just a tiny blip in Michigan State’s 13-point win over Toledo, but obviously it would have been fun to see the point guard throw down.

Spartan fans love this type of interaction and you can bet next time he gets a wide-open opportunity, he’s throwing down.
