Michigan State Basketball: 3 takeaways from dominant win over Western Michigan
By Nate Rhoades
3. Three-point shooting could use some work
Even though there were a lot of good things to see in this game. I wouldn’t be myself if I did not pull a negative takeaway into the mix. This Spartan team lacks a consistent 3-point shooter. They have many capable shooters but no one that has proven themselves to make shots every game.
Gabe Brown, Joey Hauser, and Max Christie are all capable shooters. They can all light it up from behind the arc but have not been consistent.
Hauser was 2-for-4 from beyond the arc in this game but only 1-for-3 in the game against Kansas. Brown was not able to connect from behind the arc in the game against the Broncos and was 2-for-5 against Kansas. Christie is only a freshman and still slowly finding himself and getting comfortable with the college style of play and pace. He was 1-for-6 from deep against Western Michigan and 2-for-5 against Kansas.
This team has to find consistency in shooting in order to have a good year. If these shooters can start to be consistent and hit a couple each game then it will force the defense to spread the floor. This will allow Bingham and Marble more room to move in the paint. It will also open up the lanes for Hoggard and Walker to drive inside.
Overall, this team has potential to be a sleeper. With Hoggard coming into his own and playing great ball and Hauser continuing to find his rhythm and shot, they will excel. If they find consistency in the deep ball, look out, Big Ten, because these Spartans can be dangerous.
