3. Max Christie wins Big Ten Freshman of the Year

The last time Michigan State had a Big Ten Freshman of the Year award winner was in 2017-18 when Jaren Jackson Jr. took the conference by storm and was dubbed a “unicorn” by the national media. He lived up to that nickname, doing just about everything despite being a near 7-footer.

Before that, Miles Bridges won the award in 2016-17.

Since those two straight award winners, Michigan State hasn’t had one as Michigan has two of the last three with Ignas Brazdeikis and Hunter Dickinson sandwiching Kofi Cockburn. Michigan State will reclaim the award in 2021-22 with Max Christie having a huge season.

The former No. 1 shooting guard in the 2021 recruiting class has already looked like the Spartans’ best player through two exhibition games and he has “go-to scorer” written all over him. He reminds me a lot of Gary Harris, and guess what? Harris won the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award back in 2012-13.

Christie will have some stiff competition this season but given that Michigan State needs him to take on a prominent role and that he’s supremely talented, he’s going to win the award.
