1. This loss truly affects nothing

I know this sounds wild, but Michigan State losing to Purdue really changes nothing about the outlook of the Spartans’ season. If the Spartans beat Purdue, they would be 9-0 and would still need to take care of Ohio State and Penn State. All this loss does is make sure that the Spartans have to win out and not fall to Maryland or the Nittany Lions along with Ohio State.

To win the Big Ten, Michigan State knew it had to beat Ohio State regardless. You’re not in a good spot when you have to rely on other teams winning in order to decide a tie-breaker and now Michigan State has to take matters into its own hands.

The margin for error is now slimmer as Michigan State can’t lose again and still win the Big Ten (most likely) nor can the Spartans make the playoff with two losses (presumably) but we already knew that they had to beat Ohio State to be able to do either of these things.

If anything, this loss to Purdue just puts some added emphasis on playing a clear, focused game against the Buckeyes. We may see a 2015 level of focus against Ohio State from these Spartans.

All the same goals are still alive despite losing to Purdue.
