Michigan State football in good shape with 5-star LB Harold Perkins
A week ago, Michigan State football extended an offer to five-star linebacker Harold Perkins from Cypress, Texas, and now it looks like Mel Tucker is in a good spot with him.
Running a 4-2-5 defense, Michigan State doesn’t have a need for a ton of linebackers, but two elite ones will make a huge difference. This season, Michigan State has Quavaris Crouch and Cal Haladay who have both been really solid and Tucker is looking to continue to add talent and upgrade each cycle.
Perkins would be a massive linebacker upgrade over what the Spartans have had over the past few years dating back to the Mark Dantonio era and he would be the second-highest ranked commit in Michigan State history if he does pick the green and white.
After offering, Michigan State looks like it might just be in the perfect position to potentially land him late and make a huge recruiting splash.
He was supposed to visit for the Michigan game but had to cancel, but his family is sold on the Spartans and they want to make a trip up to East Lansing soon.
This is a good sign and this shows that Perkins is serious about the Spartans since they just offered him four days before the Michigan game and he scheduled a trip (that was unfortunately cancelled) to East Lansing for that rivalry battle.
If a player plans a visit four days after his offer, he’s serious about his interest.
Perkins would be a game-changer for Michigan State football
Under Tucker, Michigan State has been recruiting at a high level and Perkins is a kid who would have never been offered nor shown interest in Dantonio’s Spartans.
Tucker is proving to be a national recruiter and he’s drawing some major interest from the top players in the country. If he continues to win like he is, he’s going to be landing some top-10 recruiting classes in East Lansing soon enough. A top-15 class in 2022 isn’t out of the question.
Perkins has been likened to Myles Jack by 247Sports and he’s an elite prospect with nearly three dozen offers. He’s ranked the No. 5 player in 2022 and second-best linebacker, according to 247Sports. If Michigan State can land him, that would make two straight classes with an elite linebacker committing to the Spartans late.
Imagine a future linebacking duo of Ma’a Gaoteote and Perkins. That’s what you call elite.
