Michigan State Football: Mel Tucker to LSU rumors are not surprising
Mel Tucker is off to a 7-0 start to the 2021 season and Michigan State football looks like a serious playoff contender. He has done the unthinkable, turning the 2-5 Spartans around in just one season, going from pushover in 2020 to contender in 2021.
With rapid success like this, Tucker is going to be the subject of plenty of coaching searches this offseason, but he has a chance to set the tone and win the fanbase over yet again.
LSU and Ed Orgeron have agreed to part ways following this season and there’s been plenty of talk about the Tigers’ athletic department showing some interest in Tucker after watching him succeed in East Lansing so quickly. Tucker has a chance to squash those rumors by saying that he has no intention of leaving Michigan State for another job.
And before you say it, I’m well aware that he did that for Colorado after he was approached by Michigan State and then he took the job a few days later. That was a different scenario because I believe he was under the impression Luke Fickell was the top candidate for the Spartans so he covered his bases by easing fans’ and players’ minds.
Tucker could get ahead of this and ease Michigan State fans’ minds by saying he has no interest in taking another job, even if LSU is currently one of the best jobs in the country.
If Tucker is serious about building something special in East Lansing, this is something he needs to do.
But these rumors aren’t surprising.
Mel Tucker rumors are going to be a regular thing
As long as Michigan State is experiencing success, Tucker’s name is going to be in coaching search rumors and it’s actually a good thing for the Spartans. It shows that the Spartans have someone special as head coach and top programs want him.
The LSU rumors are just that right now and there’s been talk of guys like Dave Aranda, James Franklin, and Joe Brady being on the potential list as well, but Tucker is an intriguing option.
Michigan State fans have a top coaching candidate in college football and that just shows the athletic department made the right hire last offseason. Now it’s time to sweeten his deal so he stays in East Lansing for the long haul.
