1. Michigan State must win at least nine games

One major qualification for a Heisman candidate is playing for a team that is considered a contender in its own conference.

Michigan State is currently 5-0 at the beginning of October and there’s a chance the Spartans could be undefeated before facing Michigan on Oct. 30. If both teams are still unbeaten at that point, it will be a top-10 game and a chance for Kenneth Walker III to account for some “Heisman moments”.

Let’s say Michigan State wins and Walker III has a big game to help the Spartans improve to 8-0, then we’ll be in serious business in the Heisman talk.

Michigan State would likely need to win just one of its final games in order to really get Walker III an invite to New York. Heisman finalists are always on teams that have a shot to win their own conference and a nine-win Big Ten team would have to fit that category. A team that wins 9-10 games with the only losses coming against Penn State and Ohio State wouldn’t be too shabby.

You have to believe that a 9-10 win team with Walker III reaching 1,700 yards as well as him becoming a receiving threat would get him an invite to the ceremony.
