We are a third of the way through the 2021 season and Michigan State football looks like one of the best teams in the Big Ten. Are the Spartans contenders or pretenders?

Honestly, it’s way too early to tell.

The Spartans are 4-0 on the year and they’re playing far better than anyone could have expected. Mel Tucker is buy dragging teams into the deep water with him, and it’s paying off.

With one month in the books, it’s report card time.

Which position group received my highest grade through the first month?

Offensive Line: B-

I’ve been impressed with the growth of the offensive line this season, but the Nebraska game was proof that there’s still a long way to go.

The interior of the line has been receiving favorable grades by Pro Football Focus while Jarrett Horst has also looked really good at times throughout the first month.

Chris Kapilovic has done a great job with this group, but there’s still some work to do. The Nebraska game was a setback and we’ll see if they let that affect them moving forward.

You can’t have an elite running back without a decent offensive line and that’s exactly what Michigan State has. Not great, not bad, just decent. The potential is there, however.
