Special Teams: A

I simply had to add this category this week because without special teams, Michigan State doesn’t beat Nebraska in Week 4. I’m not one to usually grade the Spartans’ special teams because it’s usually a mixed bag, but it’s clear that Mel Tucker has made this group a priority since taking over in East Lansing.

Let’s start with the obvious: Matt Coghlin notches another game-winner. The resume continues to build for Coghlin as he kicked three field goals against the Cornhuskers as it was one of those slow offensive days for the Spartans — he got used to being the only offense in the latter part of the Mark Dantonio era. Although a botched snap and hold on a field goal try in the first half almost was the difference in this one, he shook it off to hit three other attempts.

Even more obvious than the game-winner was the game-tying punt return touchdown by Jayden Reed who had a really strong game on special teams. Reed was getting chunk returns all game on kickoffs and he finally took one to the house on punt return in the fourth quarter when Michigan State was down by seven. Without Reed, Michigan State doesn’t win.

Lastly, Bryce Baringer had a fantastic game punting the ball. He was used quite a bit in the second half and he continued to pin the Cornhuskers deep. He’s been a bright spot on special teams this season and it looks like he could be one of the best punters in the Big Ten.

Beautiful special teams effort from Michigan State on Saturday.
