Tom Izzo is putting in some serious work on the recruiting trail lately and it’s a refreshing development for Michigan State basketball fans who were growing worrisome over the lack of additions to the 2022 class.

Just a few months ago, Michigan State saw its final commitment (Emoni Bates) in 2022 reopen his recruitment, joining Enoch Boakye who decommitted months earlier and then signed with Arizona State, reclassifying to 2021. Bates also reclassified and had Michigan State on his trimmed list, but ultimately chosen Memphis.

The class was at zero commitments before Tre Holloman, one of the top guards in the class, picked Michigan State over some other top programs, including home-state school Minnesota.

Holloman was on campus recently with Michigan State’s second commitment in the 2022 class, four-star power forward Jaxon Kohler, as well as four-star small forward target Ty Rodgers.

It’s safe to say Izzo is making Rodgers his top remaining priority in the 2022 class, getting him on campus for Grind Week which was an event that saw many former players come back to work out with the current team and talk to recruits. Izzo has also seen him on Sept. 13 and Sept. 22, according to SpartanTailgate.

Even more importantly, the Spartans have scheduled an official visit with Rodgers on Oct. 2 for Homecoming weekend.

Izzo is going all-in with Rodgers, and that’s a great development as it seemed like Michigan State wasn’t even in the race for him a few months ago. Pierre Brooks has said that the Spartans ‘need’ Rodgers in 2022, and it looks like Izzo agrees now.

How could Michigan State basketball’s 2022 class look?

With Kohler and Holloman already committed, it looks like Izzo may target 1-2 more guys and then possibly hit the portal for the remainder of the scholarships.

Rodgers is the No. 1 target on the board right now, there’s no question about that. After losing Isaac Traudt, Tarris Reed, Jalen Washington, Kijani Wright, and Jaden Schutt, Izzo knew he needed to ramp up the pressure on the remaining targets. He added Kohler to the board late and landed him just weeks after offering.

Now if he can add Rodgers to the class, he can rest easy until the offseason when the transfer portal loads up with talent. He could hit that hard in the spring and really close out 2022 strong.
