Michigan State Football: 3 takeaways from impressive win at Northwestern
2. Payton Thorne had solid command of the offense
Payton Thorne didn’t have any “wow” moments or 50-yard bombs, but he was very solid all night long, leading the offense in every way. He made some poor throws, was forced to throw it away a few times, and was the victim of a couple of weird play-calls (corner route on first down in Northwestern’s red zone up by 14 and 30-yard cross-body throw in the end zone earlier).
Overall, Thorne had a really good game and took command of the offense. He was exactly what fans wanted to see in the debut and when he gets unleashed against other non-conference opponents, we may see more of that arm talent.
Thorne showed poise all night long, didn’t panic with pressure in his face, and was very accurate on his short and intermediate throws. He took a couple of shots, but they missed the mark just barely — he did show that he has the arm to sling it deep, though.
The sophomore quarterback also flashed his wheels a couple of times, finishing with 28 yards on five carries to go along with his 185 yards and a touchdown.
Not a bad debut as full-time QB1.
