2. Defensive backs

The defensive back position wasn’t necessarily a negative for the Spartans last season, in fact, it could have been considered a positive. Shakur Brown held down the corners, while freshman Angelo Grose was a surprising bright spot. Grose has since moved to safety, a position the staff feels at which he could excel.

Alabama transfer Ronald Williams has received high praise from the coaching staff throughout fall practice. Running with the first unit with the Crimson Tide gave Williams the opportunity to sharpen his iron against the likes of NFL first-round picks DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. He should eventually take on the role as the No. 1 corner for the Spartans because he is that talented.

Former safety Michael Dowell has moved to slot corner, where he impressed in the spring game and has continued to do so throughout fall practice. Xavier Henderson returns as the top player in the secondary, and one of the top players on the defense overall. With Grose next to him in the defensive backfield, and transfer Kendell Brooks II and freshman A.J. Kirk possibly seeing time as well, the position will remain strong in 2021.

The staff has also raved about Florida transfer Chester Kimbrough, who should play opposite Williams. Returning veteran Kalon Gervin will also build off a strong 2020 campaign. Freshman Charles Brantley has impressed throughout fall practice as well. Transfers Marqui Lowery Jr. and Khary Crump could also see some action.

Another intriguing option could be CJ Hayes who has reportedly made the move to defensive back from receiver this fall.

Whoever ends up seeing the most playing time, Harlon Barnett and Travares Tillman will have the secondary remaining sharp.
