Michigan State Football: How do 2021 position groups compare to 2020?
It’s been a busy offseason for Mel Tucker and Michigan State football as the second-year head coach has completely flipped the roster around.
After a rough first season, the new head coach decided to hit the portal hard and after experiencing plenty of attrition, he has added more talent to a roster filled with MAC, Sun Belt, and other Group of Five players (who we’ve since seen head to those conferences).
The Spartans should be better this season, at least on paper, as they’ve brought in guys from Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Michigan, Minnesota, and other Power Five programs.
With this drastic roster change, how do the 2021 position groups compare to last season’s versions?
Offensive line
Better or worse (than 2020): Better
The offensive line doesn’t lose anything from last year and adds some talent like Ethan Boyd, Brandon Baldwin, Geno VanDeMark, Kevin Wigenton, and Jarrett Horst.
The line is deeper and Chris Kapilovic has had more time to mold this group this offseason. He didn’t have much time last offseason to work with his line. He has AJ Arcuri, JD Duplain, Nick Samac, Matt Allen, Blake Bueter, Matt Carrick, and Kevin Jarvis all back with starting experience.
For years, Michigan State has had one of the worst offensive lines in the Big Ten and I think we’re about to see that change in 2021 with so much more depth and experience.
Kapilovic finally has some tools to work with.
