It’s official, after months of waiting, Michigan State basketball has picked up its first official pledge in the 2022 recruiting class in the form of four-star point guard Tre Holloman.

The Minnesota native committed on Saturday afternoon after taking a few officials in June and the Spartans have to feel lucky to have landed the top-100 recruit because, well, the luck felt like it ran out with the decommitments of Emoni Bates and Enoch Boakye — although both have since reclassified to 2021.

Michigan State is looking to piece together a rather large 2022 class with a handful of possible openings for next season.

Holloman is the perfect kickstart to the class.

The backcourt should be set for a while with Holloman’s commitment as AJ Hoggard and Tyson Walker could be fighting for the starting point guard spot this season along with true freshman and former elite recruit Jaden Akins. Those three could split point guard duties all year.

Next season should be even more impressive with Holloman added to the mix.

The 6-2, 175-pounder is ranked the No. 11 point guard and 70th overall player in the 2022 class, according to the composite. He has what it takes to succeed in East Lansing.

Tough defense, aggressive around the hoop, and ability to lead a team, Holloman’s style of play fits right in with the Spartans. He’s what Izzo would call an OKG (our kind of guy).

Could Holloman be Michigan State basketball’s first 2022 domino?

Landing Holloman was big because not only is he the point guard of the future, but he could help Izzo recruit his future teammates in the class.

Holloman can get into the ears of guys like Isaac Traudt, Jaden Schutt, and Ty Rodgers, among others, and try to sell the “team up with me and win the title” line.

Michigan State’s 2022 class got a good start on Saturday and it’s only going to improve.
