Ohio State has ‘Friday Night Lights’, Michigan has the BBQ at the Big House, and most top programs have enormous recruiting events in the summer to build momentum and forge relationships with future classes.

Mel Tucker realized he needed to add a big recruiting event of his own in order to get Michigan State football into the conversation with some of the nation’s top recruiting programs.

Mark Dantonio never created a huge recruiting event but he did have big weekends in terms of hosting recruits. Fans always wanted Michigan State to catch up with Ohio State and Michigan with their massive recruiting events and Tucker is finally doing just that.

In fact, this weekend is big for the Spartans as it kicks off the first ‘Spartan Dawg Con’ event which ties in the past with the future.

This event was teased at the beginning of July by the coaching staff but it was just recently revealed, and it’s a massive ‘W’ for Tucker and Co.

What is it? Tucker hosted former players at his house for a ‘family-like’ get-together and then those Spartan Dawgs will sell the program to top recruits in the coming classes on campus.

It’s genius.

Former players loved the idea and it’s only going to help recruiting as some of the top targets in the coming classes are on campus this weekend for the event.

‘Spartan Dawg Con’ will keep Michigan State football relevant

A certain Michigan recruiting insider claimed that Michigan State was irrelevant in recruiting battles with the Wolverines and teams like Penn State and Ohio State a year ago after Rayshaun Benny flipped and Andrel Anthony spurned the Spartans.

This ‘Spartan Dawg Con’ will ensure that’s not the case and it won’t be as long as Tucker is in town.

Young recruits getting a chance to speak with Michigan State football legends who sell the program for the head coach is perfect. This idea by Tucker is genius on so many levels. While he can sell the program as the head coach, why not get former players who had success to help do that with him?

Michigan State’s recruiting effort got a huge bump with this event.
