Michigan State football addresses defensive line with 3-star DE Chase Carter
Michigan State football had yet to add to its defensive line in the 2022 class but that changed on Tuesday night as three-star defensive end Chase Carter officially became a Spartan.
The Minnesota-based defensive end was one of Michigan State’s top targets and he was down to Iowa and the Spartans. He also held offers from Iowa State and Nebraska but he felt most at home in East Lansing and it may have had something to do with Michigan State not having a single defensive line commit in its 2022 class.
Carter is the No. 943 overall recruit and sixth-best Minnesota prospect in the 2022 class, according to the composite.
On Tuesday, he became the Spartans’ 15th commitment in the class and he has the tools to become a solid defensive end at the next level. He already has the size at 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, he just needs to work on his moves.
Carter could also kick off the defensive line commits in the class as the Spartans are also pushing hard for four-star Alex VanSumeren, the younger brother of transfer linebacker Ben VanSumeren.
Michigan State football’s 2022 class filling up quickly
Since the end of June, Michigan State has added Katin Houser, Jack Nickel, Shannon Blair, Ade Willie, and now Carter. The class went from five commitments when the dead period was finally lifted to 15 in the span of about two months and the class, which MSU’s 247Sports recruiting insider Justin Thind said will probably end at around 22 commits, is filling up quickly.
The staff is being selective with these remaining spots and Carter was high on their list for some time. Now that he’s committed, they can focus on guys like VanSumeren, Ryan Baer, Dillon Tatum, and Antonio Gates Jr.
Not bad for Tucker’s first real class and 2023 should be even better.
