Michigan State Football: 3-star Jack Nickel is ideal TE commit
Mel Tucker landed a big fish on Thursday afternoon.
About a month after picking up a commitment from three-star Arizona tight end Michael Masunas, he scooped up another top target in the form of three-star Georgia-based tight end Jack Nickel who was once committed to Notre Dame.
The Spartans now have two solid tight ends in the 2022 class and both could have a big impact early on for the Spartans, especially with Tyler Hunt and Trenton Gillison as upperclassmen.
Nickel, the No. 509 overall recruit and 23rd-best tight end in the country, becomes the 14th commitment in the Spartans’ 2022 class and he’s officially Michigan State’s second-highest rated pledge.
Nickel had been trending toward the Spartans ever since his official visit to East Lansing in June and Tucker and Jay Johnson made him a top priority. It’s clear that the staff wanted two tight ends in the class and Nickel was the perfect addition.
Johnson got his wish.
Nickel is a perfect addition for Michigan State football
Michigan State’s offense hasn’t had a focus on the tight end since Josiah Price was in town, but that narrative is slowly changing with the addition of Maliq Carr in the transfer portal as well as Kameron Allen in the 2021 class and both Masunas and Nickel in 2022.
Allen is an athletic tight end as a freshman in 2021 and both Masunas and Nickel are well-rounded. Nickel stands 6-4 and 225 pounds and he’s going to be a valuable future target for Katin Houser.
The 2022 class is coming together nicely and landing a tight end who was once committed to Notre Dame and who had offers from Virginia Tech, Iowa, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Oregon, Penn State, and Wisconsin is a huge win.
The Spartans’ future offense isn’t looking too shabby.
