Michigan State football trending with 4-star DL Alex VanSumeren
There’s one name at the top of Michigan State football’s 2022 recruiting class board right now that Mel Tucker would love to reel away from some of the nation’s elite programs.
And if the current trend continues, Alex VanSumeren may soon be a Spartan.
A few big crystal balls came in for the four-star defensive lineman from Essexville, Mich., on Monday afternoon as the one-time Michigan commit looked a little greener. In fact, Justin Thind, Corey Robinson, and Stephen Brooks all put in crystal balls for the elite defensive lineman from the state of Michigan which means they probably all got a similar tip that MSU is sitting nicely.
VanSumeren is high on some other big-time programs like Clemson, Texas A&M, and Penn State, but the current trend is great news for Tucker and Co. who want to secure him sooner rather than later.
Letting this recruitment go on into the 2021 season will only allow a program like Clemson to not only make up ground but become the leader. For now, the Spartans are the presumed leaders.
Joining a family connection with Michigan State football
When recruits visit East Lansing, there’s always a common term used to refer to the atmosphere: “family-like”. We heard this all the time during the Mark Dantonio era and that’s continued even with a new head coach in charge, and it speaks volumes to the program and university.
VanSumeren can call it a family atmosphere for a different reason, however. His brother, Ben VanSumere, transferred in from Michigan this offseason and that might be a big enough pull here.
Michigan State has had plenty of luck with brothers in the past such as Jacub and Mike Panasiuk, the Bulloughs, the Dowells, and the Allens, to name a few. Alex and Ben VanSumeren would create just the latest and they could help get Michigan State football back to its winning ways after about five years of disappointment.
The four-star lineman is ranked the No. 179 recruit in the class, the No. 27 defensive lineman, and the fourth-best Michigan-based recruit.
Tucker could be on the verge of his second big recruiting win in the 2022 class (Katin Houser being the first) in the near future.
