Michigan State basketball may be best option for 4-star PG Tre Holloman

A few weeks removed from his official visit to East Lansing, Tre Holloman looks like he has his sights set on a commitment after he released a top six on Monday afternoon.

Tom Izzo and Mel Tucker have actually both been pushing hard to Holloman as he’s one of those rare dual-sport stars and Michigan State might just be the best option in his list of finalists if that’s the route he wants to take.

The Spartans have shown that they’re open to taking athletes who want to play both football and basketball as Keon Coleman and Maliq Carr have aspirations of doing so.

Not only that, but Holloman’s list of finalists only includes four schools that offer Division 1 football, and Michigan State could end up having the best program in each sport out of his final six schools.

Dayton and Marquette would be eliminated if he’s serious about playing Division 1 football while Oklahoma State, Minnesota, Michigan State, and Illinois are all fighting to land him in both sports.

Joining Michigan State basketball’s loaded PG rotation

Tucker and Izzo rolled out the red carpet for him on his visit June 2 and it seems like he’s the lone point guard the Hall of Fame basketball coach is targeting in the class with that being a loaded position group on the roster currently. The Spartans do have Tyson Walker, Jaden Akins, and AJ Hoggard at the point guard spot, but a case could be made for two of those guys (Akins, Hoggard) to play more combo guard roles.

It wouldn’t be all that bad to add another ball-handler in the form of a true point guard like Holloman because we saw what happened last season when that position was lacking.

Hoggard and Akins can still handle the ball, but they wouldn’t have too much weight on their shoulders to run the offers with Walker and Holloman splitting duties. This could take away from some minutes in the guard rotation, but Michigan State will have a likely five-man recruiting class in 2022 (or at least five spots open) and Izzo may be wise to take any of the top targets he can get.

It looks like Tarris Reed could be slipping from his grasp, Isaac Traudt likes Virginia, and Jalen Washington, Kijani Wright, and Ty Rodgers will all be tough to land.

Plus, Tucker likes Holloman as a cornerback prospect.

If he wants to play both sports, Michigan State might be the move here.
