Saturday could be an important day for Michigan State football.

A three-star tight end from Arizona could be closing in on a decision to join the Spartans’ 2022 and he’s actually a very important prospect because he could help Michigan State land a top quarterback in the cycle as well.

Michael Masunas, a three-star from Chandler, Ariz., took a trip to East Lansing last weekend and he announced on Friday that he’d be committing on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT — or 3 p.m. ET for you time zone novices. The timing is interesting given that he’s fresh off a Michigan State visit, but he also took a trip to Utah this weekend so there’s a chance he may have been swayed by the Utes.

Or maybe his trip to Utah made him realize that Michigan State was just a different feel and the right spot for him.

Either way, this is a big decision.

As for the potential domino effect with a certain quarterback, Masunas is high school teammates at Hamilton with four-star target Nicco Marchiol who’s announcing his decision on June 21.

If Michigan State can land Masunas, maybe Marchiol thinks twice about his commitment which many experts are thinking will be to either West Virginia or Arizona State.

Although they may not be a package deal, having a familiar face commit to one of Marchiol’s top options might just be the tipping point in MSU’s favor.

Tight end becoming a priority in Jay Johnson’s offense

From day one, offensive coordinator Jay Johnson has said that he wants to make tight end a focal point on offense, and adding a good-looking prospect like Masunas would be a good start.

Johnson has a solid group with Kameron Allen, Trenton Gillison, Maliq Carr, Tyler Hunt, and Adam Berghorst in 2021, but add Masunas to the mix and the offense is set for a while.

Keep an eye on Twitter at around 3 p.m. ET to see if he’s the third player to commit to Michigan State’s 2022 class in the span of a little over a week. My gut says he will be. The Spartans will be on commit watch on Saturday.
