Michigan State football has a problem on its hands — a good one. Mel Tucker and the Spartans have a few big quarterback targets on their board and after the weekend of June 18, two of them will have taken official visits to check out the program.

I can’t remember a time when Michigan State had this many talented quarterbacks interested in the program in the same class.

Headlines from the opening weekend of June were dominated by recently-decommitted four-star quarterback Nicco Marchiol. He took a visit shortly after decommitting from Florida State and he really enjoyed his time in East Lansing. It also seemed like he may have been the staff’s top quarterback target.

But another name is surging.

Katin Houser, a four-star Boise State pledge, was supposed to take an official to Michigan State at the end of June, but he moved it up to June 18, according to 247Sports.

Does this mean the staff wants to make a decision on that top quarterback right away? Probably, but this might also mean that Houser wants to make sure he’s making the best decision before the Spartans pick up a commitment from Marchiol, Luther Richesson, or Justyn Martin.

We will know a lot about the staff’s big board after Houser’s visit, especially if Marchiol hasn’t made a decision yet — which doesn’t seem like it’s about to happen.

Houser would be a program-changer for MSU

Marchiol and Houser would be program-changers for MSU and would both have incredibly high ceilings at Michigan State under Jay Johnson.

But Houser is trending nationally right now, and for good reason.

The four-star Boise State commit was just the “Alpha Dog” of the Elite 11 Regional Camp in Bellflower, Calif. He earned an invite to the Elite 11 finals and he’s making a name for himself. It’s actually impressive that MSU secured an official visit because he canceled North Carolina and Duke visits after his trip to Boise State.

Michigan State might actually have a shot here and it would be Tucker’s first “big fish” commitment on the offensive side of the ball.

You can’t go wrong with either Marchiol or Houser, however, and if those are your two options, you’re doing something right.
