When you think of Michigan State’s quarterback room heading into the 2021 season, a few names come to mind immediately: Anthony Russo, Payton Thorne, and Hamp Fay. Heck, even Theo Day has been mentioned in the quarterback battle over the past couple of seasons but the likely scenario for him is a transfer or he may be buried on the depth chart.

The name that often gets forgotten is Noah Kim. The redshirt freshman was a late addition to the Spartans’ 2020 recruiting class and he was a former Virginia Tech commit. Mark Dantonio wrestled him way from the Hokies and many believed it was a last-ditch effort to land a quarterback and nothing more.

Well, Kim out-performed expectations on Saturday afternoon, making some really good downfield throws as well as intermediate ones and not making many mistakes.

While he is more of a slenderly-built quarterback who may look like one hit could sideline him for weeks, he still has all summer to bulk up with the Spartans’ conditioning and nutrition program. He looked like a serious starting option with some of his throws that wowed the crowd.

Kim went from option No. 5 in most people’s eyes before Saturday to at least the third-string quarterback and right on the outside of that Thorne-Russo battle.
