You’re crazy if you didn’t see this as the top addition for the 2021-22 roster. Having two roster spots open up only means that Tom Izzo no longer has to worry about how he’d make room for Emoni Bates if he decided to reclassify.

If Emoni wanted to reclassify, there’s no way Michigan State would have turned him away anyways, but now no one has to have the tough conversation with Izzo about probably not getting any playing time with the way the roster was shaping up.

Bates is the top priority for the coaching staff right now but there’s probably not much they can do to ensure he winds up in East Lansing next season. He has been relatively quiet about his impending decision so it’s hard to say that anyone will have an influence on that declaration whenever it does happen.

Michigan State needs a top-tier small forward and someone who can get it back to the Final Four and Bates would be just that. It helps that he’s good friends with Gabe Brown who is currently projected to be a starter for next season at small forward. That relationship should only help.

But have Jaden Akins and Emoni settled their differences?

This would be the best possible addition, transfer portal or not.
