Pierre Brooks becomes Michigan State basketball’s 16th Mr. Basketball signee
The phrase “the best players in Michigan go to Michigan State” has been thrown around a bit over the years, but that hasn’t quite been the case as much lately with Michigan on the rise.
But Pierre Brooks gave a shot in the arm to the phrase on Friday afternoon as he was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan. He’s the first Michigan State signee to take home the prestigious award since Foster Loyer in 2018.
Brooks helped lead Detroit Douglass to the state championship this season and put up some really gaudy numbers en route to the title.
On top of that, he’s one of the top recruits in the country, ranked the No. 66 prospect in the 2021 class and third-best recruit in the state of Michigan, according to the composite.
Brooks accepted the award on Friday afternoon.
Joining an elite group with Michigan State basketball
Becoming Mr. Basketball already puts Brooks in an elite club but he joins 15 past winners who also decided to attend Michigan State.
Let’s take a look at the past Mr. Basketball winners who chose the Spartans:
- Sam Vincent (1981)
- Matt Steigenga (1988)
- Anthony Miller (1990)
- Jon Garavaglia (1993)
- Jason Richardson (1999)
- Marcus Taylor (2000)
- Kevin Torbert (2001)
- Paul Davis (2002)
- Drew Neitzel (2004)
- Derrick Nix (2009)
- Keith Appling (2010)
- Matt Costello (2012)
- Deyonta Davis (2015)
- Cassius Winston (2016)
- Foster Loyer (2018)
Since the first Mr. Basketball award in 1981, Michigan State has had 16 winners commit and Michigan is a relatively close second with 11.
Three of the last four winners spent some time in the NBA — and Appling even made a short stint — but Brooks is expected to be the Spartans’ best Mr. Basketball winner since 2016.
The future is bright for Brooks.
