Tyson Walker’s decision to transfer from Northeastern was met with plenty of interest from Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo and it’s paying off.

Tom Izzo has knocked the transfer portal in the past, but he took advantage of it two years ago with the addition of Joey Hauser and he could be on the verge of adding another big name.

Although he wasn’t a blue-chip recruit at the high school level a few years ago, Tyson Walker has become one of the biggest names on the market after averaging 18.8 points and 4.4 assists per game with Northeastern this past season. He was first-team all-conference and was the CAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2020-21.

After that huge season, he decided to transfer from Northeastern and he immediately received interest from top programs such as Kansas, Maryland, Texas and the Spartans.

Izzo has been in consistent contact ever since and it seems to be paying off.

In fact, the Spartans have picked up three Crystal Balls on 247Sports for Walker over the past 24 hours, including one from MSU insider Justin Thind. He’s usually careful about when he makes predictions and when he does put a crystal ball in, it’s accurate more often than not.

Walker would fill an immediate need at point guard for Michigan State and while the Spartans have one of the best recruits at the position coming in with the 2021 class, he doesn’t need to be thrown into the fire. Jaden Akins could learn a lot from Walker and he’ll help him grow and mature at a better pace.

This addition would also make the roster resemble that of a Big Ten contender again.

Michigan State never lacked talent, but it didn’t have depth at key positions and this fixes that. Plus, a rotation of Walker, Akins and AJ Hoggard at the point would be huge.

And for those saying “he played terrible competition at Northeastern”, all you have to do is look at what he did against quality opponents in non-conference play. He scored 10 against West Virginia, 19 against Georgia and 27 versus North Carolina. And he’ll have a better cast surrounding him at MSU than he had at Northeastern.

Plus, look at what a guy like Carlik Jones did in his first year at Louisville after transferring from Radford. He averaged 16.8 points and 4.5 assists while contending for ACC Player of the Year.

Don’t sleep on this potential addition of Walker at MSU.
