As the offseason slowly approaches, Michigan State basketball will be looking to add some transfers such as Penn State’s John Harrar.

It’s only been a few days since the official end of a lot of teams’ 2020-21 seasons but Tom Izzo has wasted no time reaching out to guys in the transfer portal.

Michigan State is preparing for a “First Four” matchup with UCLA on Thursday night, but Izzo knows that the offseason is drawing near and he’ll need to perfect his roster to make another run at a Big Ten title next season. Finishing in ninth place in the Big Ten this year had him in an uncomfortable spot and it was also the first year in which he had a losing record in conference play.

Fortunately, the Spartans still made the NCAA Tournament, Izzo’s 23rd straight, but it came with a price because they have to participate in a play-in game.

In order to avoid this late-season stress and comfortably make the tournament next year, Izzo will need to add some transfers (depending on potential attrition) with experience and plenty of talent.

According to reports, Izzo has already reached out to Tyson Walker, a talented point guard from Northeastern, and on Monday, it was revealed that he was also gauging interest with Penn State transfer John Harrar.

Harrar is a familiar face as he’s played for Penn State for the past four seasons, scoring over 500 career points. He’s not a huge offensive threat, but he did have his best season in 2020-21, averaging 8.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He also shot 55 percent from the floor and is a more traditional big who doesn’t exactly have range to shoot jumpers but can bang in the post.

It’ll be interesting to see if this means Izzo is expecting some post attrition this offseason or if this is just to fill a void left by Enoch Boakye.
