Michigan State Basketball: 3 players who should be getting less minutes
AJ Hoggard
I know that I tend to start every slide by complimenting the players that I think should see less time, but I really think that AJ Hoggard is the best pure point guard on our team. The only reason that I think he should see reduced playing time is that I don’t think a single one of the listed point guards on this roster should be doing a majority of the ball handling.
The offense seems to be at peak efficiency when the ball is kicked out to the wing to either Josh Langford or Aaron Henry. These two guys can shoot, drive to the bucket, and pass as well as any of the guards on our team. Hoggard is easily one of the best passers on the team, but he is not a threat off-ball.
As this team looks more toward Henry and Langford to control the offense, Hoggard’s role in the offense slowly disappears. If he exists solely to dribble past mid court and pass, he’s wasting a spot on the court until he learns how to shoot.
In Michigan State’s path to develop a tighter nine-man rotation, this is a necessary move. It may not look pretty on paper, but it has to happen.
