Michigan State Football: Keon Coleman salvages nightmare 2021 National Signing Day
When it looked like Michigan State football was going to miss out on every target for National Signing Day, Keon Coleman picked the Spartans.
Some people woke up to a nightmare on Wednesday morning as rumors were picking up steam regarding the potential flip of top commit Rayshaun Benny to Michigan.
They were realized a short time later when the four-star lineman announced his signing with the Wolverines after being committed to Michigan State since November. It was a tough pill to swallow for fans who were hoping to hold on to one of Michigan’s top prospects but this was something MSU fans had been used to for years.
Recruits flipping to a rival wasn’t exactly a new trend, but it still stung nonetheless.
And the crystal balls were also flying in for the only other top prospect Michigan State was in on to Tulane — not an ideal situation. Keon Coleman was thought to be an MSU lean but the surge was that the Green Wave were about to win him over after a lengthy recruiting battle which saw him commit to Kansas, decommit and then release his top six schools before going quiet.
Things weren’t looking good, but Michigan State executed a Hail Mary, landing the four-star receiver and dual-sport athlete at the last minute.
Coleman was a big get, especially after losing some recruiting momentum with the flip of Benny to Michigan and he salvaged what would have been a nightmare signing day for Mel Tucker.
The talented receiver — and point guard/shooting guard — will likely get a shot to play right away and will give Tom Izzo some much-needed depth in the backcourt. He’s ranked the No. 42 receiver in the 2021 class, according to 247Sports, and he held over 40 offers.
Michigan State needed this good news.
