With the 2021 class just weeks away from being sewn up, which priority recruits could still sign with Michigan State football?

Through the early signing period and just over a week from National Signing Day, Michigan State has the No. 40 recruiting class in the country which is also good for ninth in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports.

While this may not seem all that impressive, there’s still a chance it could move up and if you counted transfers toward recruiting class rankings, the Spartans would undoubtedly be higher. They have landed a handful of instant impact transfers but also some 2021 class recruits who will make their presences felt right away.

However, there are still a few targets still left on the board and here’s who tops the list of the “must-sign” prospects remaining for Michigan State on signing day.

For months, Michigan State has been one of the favorites to land four-star defensive end Davon Townley from Minnesota. However, it looked like he would be headed to either Arizona State or Penn State given the relationships he built with both programs’ coaches and Mel Tucker was new to the recruiting battle. But Michigan State has made up ground quickly.

Tucker may not end up winning this recruitment, but the fact that he’s even in it is huge.

Townley is looking slightly like an Arizona State lean, at least according to Allen Trieu’s crystal ball prediction on 247Sports, but the fact that he put off his decision from the early period until National Signing Day tells me that Michigan State has a shot.

The Spartans could use some defensive line depth and Townley would provide that instantly. He’s the type of kid with his 6-6, 220-pound frame who could compete for time right away.

The Minneapolis-native is ranked the No. 325 prospect in the class and 19th-best strong-side defensive end, according to 247Sports.
