I’m not sure if this one is all that realistic (it’s probably not), but Michigan State could use some extra tight end depth, especially since that’s supposedly Jay Johnson’s most important position on offense — or so he claims.

If that’s the case and I’m Mel Tucker, I’m hunting for tight ends in the portal to complement guys like Tyler Hunt, Trenton Gillison and potentially Matt Dotson if he returns. The Spartans also have Tommy Guajardo who was a redshirt last season along with incoming freshman from Texas Kameron Allen who has some potential.

Why not add a guy who could have an immediate impact while mentoring guys immediately like former five-star recruit Arik Gilbert who decided to transfer from LSU.

With Tucker’s ties to Georgia in his time as a defensive coordinator with the Bulldogs, he may already have a relationship with Gilbert or at the very least, the two sides are familiar with each other. It will be difficult to reel him away from the SEC and his home state because the rumor was that he left LSU because he was homesick. It seems as if Tennessee and Florida are making a serious run for the No. 5 recruit in the 2020 class who had 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns.

Michigan State should also keep an eye on Oklahoma tight end transfer Grant Calcaterra who had an impressive career with the Sooners before retiring due to a high number of concussions and un-retiring to transfer to Auburn and then change his mind when Gus Malzahn was fired.
