Michigan State Basketball: Can Spartans continue strong play vs. UDM?
By Nate Rhoades
A look into the Michigan State basketball vs. Detroit Mercy game on Friday. MSU has started this season off strong and looks to continue this great play.
Michigan State has started its season 3-0, looking to notch a fourth win against Detroit Mercy on Friday night. The Spartans have beaten Eastern Michigan, Notre Dame and most recently Duke.
The Spartans look keep the strong play rolling as the head back home to East Lansing to play the Detroit Mercy Titans. If the Titans have anything to say about it, this win will not come as easy has the Spartans would like.
The Titans, led by Antoine Davis, are looking to upset the Spartans. Davis will be someone to look out for. He’s a junior coming into this season and the top scorer for the Titans, averaging 25 points throughout his first two years and shooting 39 percent from the floor. If he continues this trend, he could be an issue for the Spartans.
Detroit Mercy also has Taurean Thompson who’s a grad transfer. He will look to get back to his old Syracuse days of playing. As a freshman, he averaged 9.2 points and 3.8 rebounds. He then transferred to Seton Hall and is now with Detroit Mercy and never progressed. However, Thompson has the skill set to give the Spartans a problem.
Michigan State, led by Aaron Henry and Joshua Langford, looks to keep its strong play rolling as it comes back home to East Lansing to take on Detroit Mercy. Henry is an All-Big Ten caliber player who looks to continue to grow as a player. He has shown immense leadership on and off the court. He was even seen late in the game coaching the Spartans on the sideline, jumping up from Tom Izzo’s chair to get the guys moving.
Henry is followed by one of the deepest Spartan teams in the Izzo era.
Joey Hauser will seek to turn down the fouls and continue to show the offense prowess that he has. He can do just about everything down low. Malik Hall and Julius Marble are high energy forwards who bring a spark off the bench. They play their role within the system and make plays to keep the momentum.
Rocket Watts has made the transition to the point guard role this year. In the last game against Duke, he got his first start. He was a great scorer in this game with 20 points. He, however, is still getting used to this position because he only had three assists. Watts will get the ball moving in this game against UDM and will continue to make strides at the point guard position.
This game will show who the Spartans really are and will get their fourth win. They will continue to make strides and show everyone why they will end up winning the conference this year.
