Tom Izzo has been exhibiting some coachspeak in the weeks leading up to the start of the season, stating that Foster Loyer has been progressing nicely at point guard and he doesn’t know who will start at the one, him or sophomore sensation Rocket Watts.

To me, the pick is easy.

Watts has to be the starting option at the one even if he’s not a natural point guard. He has playmaking abilities and until Jaden Akins gets to campus next season, Watts needs to control the one with his scoring and playmaking strengths.

Izzo likes to hand the keys to the offense to the point guard and Watts seems ready to take over on that end of the floor. Plus, he has a massive advantage over Loyer on defense.

Watts’ shooting numbers from his freshman season aren’t all that great but we have to remember he had a slow start to the season. He was injured and then missed a month before coming back and looking much more explosive. He finished the year averaging 9.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 39 percent from the floor and 28 percent from deep.

Expect Watts to be a national breakout star and his numbers will all improve.
