Michigan State Football: 3 players we wish we saw more of vs. Rutgers
2. Trenton Gillison
Another guy we heard plenty about during the offseason and who both Jay Johnson and Ted Gilmore dubbed as someone who is close to taking that next step, Trenton Gillison started over Matt Dotson who was coming off a major injury last year and was expected to be a step slower this season — but didn’t have the same production as the senior.
Gillison ended the 2019 season on a high note with a breakout performance in the Pinstripe Bowl against Wake Forest but didn’t notch a single reception against Rutgers.
Granted, Dotson had a decent game catching the ball, grabbing five receptions for 50 yards and picking a few balls up off the dirt for fingertip catches. He showed improvement there while his blocking could still use a little work, but this still doesn’t explain why Johnson, who called the tight ends the MVPs of his offense, didn’t use Gillison more.
If Michigan State is going to have success at all on the offensive side of the ball this season, it needs to utilize its most talented players and Gillison is one of them.
