Michigan State football somehow labeled “overrated” by CBS Sports
Michigan State football has somehow been labeled as one of the most overrated Big Ten teams for 2020 and we’re not sure how that’s possible.
When you think of one word to describe Michigan State football ahead of the 2020 season, it’s probably “uncertain” or some variation of the word.
No one is expecting Michigan State to do much of anything in 2020 with Mel Tucker taking over for a suddenly-retired Mark Dantonio. Expectations are low or unknown in the new era but that’s not a knock on Tucker but rather just stating the unknown.
If you know anyone who is optimistic about the upcoming season, you’ll hear them predict 5-3 or 4-4 records, but nothing more.
Apparently no one told CBS Sports.
According to CBS Sports, Michigan State is one of the most “overrated” teams heading into the 2020 season, joining Nebraska, Iowa and Michigan.
The other three make sense because they are getting plenty of love from the media (maybe save Nebraska) but Michigan State has not been “overrated” by anyone heading into the season. The consensus prediction for the Spartans is 3-5 or 2-6 and rarely have we seen anyone say the Spartans will finish 4-4 or 5-3, but apparently CBS Sports is hearing too much MSU optimism.
This is what the writer, David Cobb, had to say:
"The Spartans are just 9-9 in Big Ten play over the past two seasons. They’re also adjusting to a new coach in Mel Tucker while returning no more than three starters on either side of the ball. Given all the transition and the fact that there is no appealing option at quarterback, this team could challenge the 2016 and 2006 teams for the title of worst of the century at Michigan State. A 3-5 record in the regular season should be considered a success for these Spartans, but don’t be surprised if they also struggle in winnable games against Rutgers, Maryland and Northwestern."
So because people expect the Spartans to beat teams like Rutgers, Maryland and Northwestern, that makes them overrated? Got it.
Here’s a little newsflash for you, David, not one MSU fan is even overrating the Spartans. You don’t need to bash the Spartans for no reason. Also, look up what the term “overrated” means before dubbing one of the projected Big Ten East bottom-dwellers as just that.
