Michigan State Football: Ranking the position groups heading into 2020
1. Running Backs
And the top position group on the roster has to be the running backs. Led by Elijah Collins, Michigan State’s backfield has talent and depth that could get it back to the “pound, green, pound” days of old.
Collins rushed for 988 yards and five touchdowns last season on 4.4 yards per carry, but the consensus feeling is that he’s due for a huge season based on an improved offensive line and the fact that he was creating lanes for himself when there were no holes to run through. I’d expect him to average at least 5.0 yards per carry as a sophomore.
Behind him is Anthony Williams Jr. who could be the speedy back that the team needs to give Collins breaks every now and then. He will be a sophomore and the potential is there.
Connor Heyward is back after deciding to sit after four games a year ago and enter the NCAA transfer portal. He decided that Michigan State was still the place for him and if he can add some power (he’s already worked on his frame), he could be a legit third-down back or passing-down back. He has the hands to be a serious threat out of the backfield in the pass game.
And then there’s Brandon Wright, Donovan Eaglin and Jordon Simmons who will all provide depth and get some touches this season to spell Collins and Williams.
This group is deep and talented. Get ready for a run-heavy offense.
