Michigan State football picked up a surprise commitment on Tuesday evening as three-star safety AJ Kirk became a member of the Spartans’ 2021 class.

Sometimes commitments come out of nowhere. While some recruits these days like to release top schools lists and then plan commitment dates to be broadcast on social media, there are guys like AJ Kirk who like to be low key.

And that’s not a bad thing.

Sure, it’s a good thing to be excited about taking that next step as a football player, committing to your college of choice for the next 3-5 years, but it’s also admirable to do so and not look for the spotlight. There’s no right or wrong way to do it, but Kirk had one of the most low-key recruitments in recent memory, committing to MSU on Tuesday night.

What’s more intriguing about this commitment is the fact that Kirk held offers from the likes of Ohio State, Florida, Penn State, Arizona State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska and Kentucky.

That is what you call an elite offer sheet for the three-star from Columbus, Ohio. Sure, his offer from Ohio State may not have been committable yet and it looks like he may be coming off an injury, but whenever you can go into the Buckeyes’ backyard and swipe a kid with an offer sheet that resembles a four-star’s, that’s a massive win.

And he’s fun to watch.

Kirk plays a physical brand of football that will fit right in with what the Spartans are trying to run and he’s going to be quite the treat for Scottie Hazelton and Co.

While he has no ranking in the composite, he’s rated about an 86 overall which is good for an above average three-star and that might just be higher if not for an injury. And he comes from an athletic family as he’s the younger brother of former Ohio State star Mike Doss.

It’ll be interesting to see this kid grow.
