Like Devontae Dobbs, Trenton Gillison was one of the best prospects at his position in the nation when he committed to Michigan State in 2018. He redshirted and played in 2019 with high expectations behind Matt Dotson but with the rise of Matt Seybert, he faded into the background a bit.

Now that Dotson is coming off a serious leg injury and Seybert graduated, it’s a fair assumption that Gillison is going to see an increase in snaps and targets.

Add in the fact that Jay Johnson’s offense likes to focus on tight ends and you have a recipe for a breakout season. This kid has the talent, athleticism and size to become one of the best tight ends in the league, he just needs to be given that opportunity.

As a redshirt freshman, Gillison caught 12 passes for 147 yards and ended the season with a breakout game against Wake Forest in the Pinstripe Bowl. If he can build on that and prove that he’s more than just a backup tight end, I think we’ll see him mold into an All-Big Ten type performer.

If I had to wager a guess, I’d say he finishes the year with 20-30 catches for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, at least.
