Michigan State Football: 3 reasons to be excited for Spartan football
1. Complete overhaul
No more jet sweeps. No more pointless trips to the endzone. No more boring special teams. Sorry if you’re reading this Brandon Sowards, but punt returns almost always resulted in fair catches and that’s not your fault. A Mark Dantonio and Sowards-less team is not just what it looks like at face value, it’s a sign of the changes of the future.
Barring a miracle, this team will regress; but with zero expectations and a new staff, this season will be much more relaxing to watch. We won’t have all of Dantonio’s idiosyncrasies nagging at us throughout the season. Instead, we’ll be watching and learning about a new coach and his new team.
One of the more exciting parts of this new team is actually defensively for me. While the defense is destined to take a step back, there is one facet of the game that will improve. Once or so a year under Dantonio, this Michigan State defense would get completely decimated against any team that threw dink-and-dunk passes against it. It was a clear weak spot on a defense that was otherwise great.
There is obviously more that’ll change, but it’s the small things that’ll stack up and give us a more enjoyable year from a viewer’s perspective.
