Tommy Guajardo, TE, Freshman

With a huge amount of turnover on this team offensively and defensively, the door is open for some true freshmen to make an impact. The first, and perhaps most obvious, is incoming tight end Tommy Guajardo.

At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Guajardo will likely see some playing time as a true freshman in a tight ends room that has a lot of experience and not a lot of production. Presumed starter Matt Dotson finished his last season after an Achilles injury, but has been seen catching passes with the team. His health hasn’t been specified, but it’s unlikely that he’ll return to the same physical form that he was in before the injury.

That being said, nobody has separated themselves at this position. Trenton Gillison looked like a potential option after an 88-yard receiving performance in the final game of the 2019 season, but this spot is as wide open as it gets.

If Guajardo doesn’t win the job by the end of the year, he will at some point. Expect either Gillison or Guajardo to step up on a youthful offensive unit.
