Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo believes “100 percent” that a 2020-21 season will happen, even if it’s in a modified fashion.

Tom Izzo is devastated. No, not because he believes the college basketball season may be in jeopardy, but rather because the football season has been postponed.

The Hall of Fame basketball coach is a huge football fan, so when he heard the news that the 2020 season would at least be moved to the spring — the Big Ten and Pac-12 for now — he was heartbroken. His fall Saturdays would now be spent away from Spartan Stadium and likely focusing on prepping for the upcoming basketball season.

But will college basketball happen?

If it were up to Izzo, it would be a certainty. He went on 97.1 The Ticket’s The Morning Show with Stoney in Detroit and spoke about his belief in the upcoming season, saying he “100 percent believes” college basketball will happen in 2020-21.

"“I think there’s a lot of things that are going to happen. Ours is a little easier to manage. One, I don’t know why, I just think they’ll be a vaccine. I think the testing, you hear about the saliva test that the NBA and I think the NFL is using isn’t quite FDA approved but it’s getting close. I think there’s a lot of things that could change in the weeks to come and hopefully that’ll advance us and we get a chance to learn. If I had a son, which I do, and he’s actually playing a little bit for me, I can’t think of any safer place than where he spent the last six, seven weeks. We tested every week, we quarantined, we educated and supported.”"

Izzo makes some good points. It’s more manageable to monitor 12-15 players and a handful of coaches than it is an entire staff and 100 student athletes like football would have been forced to do. Also, he believes a vaccine is closer to being created and testing is improving.

Rapid changes in the recovery process are happening and that’s why Izzo believes that college basketball will happen.

Everyone needs some positivity, and this is it. If Izzo is “100 percent” sure that a season will happen, maybe it’s time to be optimistic.
