Michigan State football: Commitment from Andrel Anthony needed for momentum
Michigan State football could use a commitment from three-star receiver Andrel Anthony to build some much-needed momentum in the 2021 class.
Back in the spring, it seemed like Mel Tucker and Michigan State had all the momentum. Even during a time when spring practices and campus visits were cancelled due to COVID-19, the new staff was picking up commitments left and right.
No, they weren’t landing four or five-star commits, but the staff was landing guys who seemed to fit the mold of what Mark Dantonio formed over the previous decade.
The higher-ranked prospects will come, but since that hot streak of commitments back in April, Michigan State has been quiet. The green and white have landed just one commitment since May 8 and he, too, was a three-star and one of the lower-rated guys in the Spartans’ 2021 class.
On July 31, that could all change.
Three-star East Lansing-native Andrel Anthony is announcing his college decision on Thursday evening at 4 p.m. ET and if he picks the green and white, that would be huge for momentum in the 2021 class. It could even help the staff when it comes to the continued recruitment of Jaylen Reed and Jamari Buddin who both committed to Penn State.
Also, it could give the staff the momentum it needs to work toward other top targets who could boost the class.
If Anthony did commit to the Spartans, he would become the highest-rated pledge in their 2021 class, just ahead of three-star East Lansing High teammate Ethan Boyd.
Anthony is ranked the No. 529 prospect in the country and 85th-best receiver, according to the 247Sports composite. The Spartans will be fighting off Michigan and Penn State for the talented three-star.
Landing Anthony would go a long way for the 2021 class and could help when the staff puts in efforts to flip some top in-state prospects.
