Coming from an athletic family, it’s no surprise that Connor Heyward is an impressive athlete in his own regard. He came to Michigan State as a recruit without a true position actually listed as “athlete” and the coaching staff felt he fit best at running back.

It made sense early on. He had a strong frame and speed so he could run through defenders or past them.

In a breakout sophomore campaign, he had 529 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 4.5 yards per touch and he showed off incredible hands, catching 32 passes for 249 yards. He was versatile and could do a little of everything, but that all changed in 2019. He lost his starting job to redshirt freshman Elijah Collins who proved to be a much more effective runner. He decided to then use 2019 as a redshirt and then transfer after four games.

Heyward had a change of heart in the offseason, announcing his intention to return to Michigan State in 2020 and compete for carries.

But the new staff may utilize him a bit differently and he has to prove that he deserves a bigger role on offense — or maybe even defense — than the one he had under Mark Dantonio.

Right now, Heyward has the most to prove of any skill position player on the team not playing the quarterback position.
