I’ve been on the Kalon Gervin hype train for a couple of years now and after watching him play well in limited time as a redshirt freshman in 2019, the 2020 season is his time to truly break out.

In 2019, Gervin played in 10 total games and started against Ohio State, recording eight total tackles on the season and showing that he’s just scratching the surface. The former Cass Tech (Mich.) High star has big shoes to fill in 2020 with Josiah Scott deciding to leave for the NFL a year early, getting drafted by the Jaguars in round four.

Josh Butler is also gone which means that both starting cornerbacks from last season’s opener are gone, leaving two jobs up for grabs. Gervin should win one of them while there’ll be a battle for the other between guys like Julian Barnett, Shakur Brown, Davion Williams and Christian Jackson.

If Michigan State wants to maximize its starting talent in the defensive backfield, the 5-11, 186-pound sophomore would be a safe bet.

Having Harlon Barnett back in charge of the defensive backfield will help Gervin become a star even quicker.
