Matt Dotson is back for his senior year for the Spartans and he’ll surely be in for a breakout season in Jay Johnson’s tight end-centric offense, but don’t overlook the guy who will be backing him up.

Trenton Gillison came to Michigan State as a four-star prospect from Ohio, teammates with Xavier Henderson and both were going to take over the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, respectively. Through two years, Henderson has cracked the starting lineup as a safety and Gillison has climbed the depth chart as that No. 2 tight end.

With Matt Seybert gone and Dotson coming off an injury, this is the best chance the 6-4, 250-pound tight end has to crack the starting rotation. He’ll also have the benefit of a fresh start under a new coaching staff.

Gillison ended his redshirt freshman on a high note with a career game in the Pinstripe Bowl against Wake Forest, catching four passes for 88 yards. I think that’s when everyone realized just how special he could be in the green and white.

Johnson’s offense may allow for two star tight ends in 2020 and Gillison will be one.
