With the commitment of four-star guard Pierre Brooks on Wednesday, we’ll take a look at what he brings to Michigan State basketball.

Everyone’s focus seemed to be on Karime Mane and the finalization of the 2020 recruiting class but Pierre Brooks’ sudden commitment has caught everyone’s attention — and for good reason.

The four-star shooting guard from Detroit is the state’s No. 2 prospect, according to 247Sports, and a top-100 recruit in the country in the 2021 class. He has become the Spartans’ first pledge in 2021 and he could set off a domino effect, especially if kids are looking to commit before their spot is taken in what could be a 2-3 man class.

Brooks’ commitment is a big one for Tom Izzo and it’ll fill a need as Josh Langford will be gone and Aaron Henry will be a senior, assuming he returns. There’s a good chance Rocket Watts could leave Michigan State early for the NBA, too, depending on his sophomore season.

So what does Brooks bring to the table? Let’s take a look at some highlights.

Well, he’s a strong 6-foot-5, 185-pound prospect who doesn’t lack shooting touch. He can make shots from just about anywhere and doesn’t mind putting the ball on the floor and shooting from mid-range to avoid traffic. He can drive and score or drive and dish and while he creates for himself quite a bit, he has good court vision and can find open teammates.

Brooks isn’t the fastest guy on the floor or the most explosive athlete, but he always plays under control and is a solid finisher around the rim.

He can put a body on defenders and back them down or he can finesse his way to the basket. He doesn’t back down from contact and plays with aggressiveness.

If you’re looking for a player comparison, I’ve said multiple times that Brooks reminds me of Denzel Valentine with a little more athleticism coming in. He has a slightly better shot at the high school level and isn’t as good of a passer, but he has leadership abilities and is a very smart kid off the court as well.

Michigan State got a good one in Brooks and he’ll soon be a star in East Lansing and a fan favorite.
