In my eyes, the loss of Cassius Winston is the equivalent of a normal team losing two point guards. Until Rocket Watts hit his stride in the green and white, the Spartans struggled badly when Cassius was off the floor. Foster Loyer’s inefficiency at both ends of the ball was MSU’s Achilles heel for most of the season. Eventually Rocket was able to become the secondary ball handler, alleviating the pressure off of Cassius.

Unless Foster Loyer suddenly grows four inches and packs on 40 pounds overnight, it doesn’t look like Michigan State currently has any depth at the point, leaving incoming freshman AJ Hoggard as a possible option to back up Rocket Watts next season.

Hoggard is everything that Loyer isn’t. A strong, physical guard who get score down low. He’s big, but quick on his feet and can score off the dribble. He’s more of a passer than Loyer and is a great distributor. This, with his defending ability should have him getting significant playing time as a freshman.

Ideally, Izzo would move Loyer to more of an off ball role with Hoggard filling in as backup point guard as the season progresses.
